Andy Caffrey sings at campaign event one month before Obama and Romney

Caffrey promises more Eco-Singing to come and album recorded with constituents from all six 2nd district Counties

Caffrey will conduct first Gaiabilly singing workshop and recording session at Chinmaya Mission on February 12

(Redway, CA) Before President Obama did it, before Mitt Romney did it, Andy Caffrey sang at a 2012 campaign event. On December 22, in his opening remarks at a debate among the Democratically-registered candidates running for the 2nd district Congressional seat, Caffrey began the debate by singing the opening verse and chorus of “Where Are We Gonna Work When The Trees Are Gone.” The song, composed by Caffrey’s 1980s Earth First! organizing partner Darryl Cherney, tells the story of the 1986 hostile takeover of the Pacific Lumber Co. by corporate raider Charles Hurwitz who, over the following 17 years, went on to liquidate the last significant unprotected stands of old growth coastal redwoods left anywhere on Earth.

Caffrey sang the song to the Eureka Progressive Democratic Club to emphasize his, unique among all nine other candidates, roots in Humboldt & Mendocino counties fighting for the people, wild places, and sustainable jobs on the North Coast. Caffrey says he’s, “The North Coast Choice,” because he alone among the candidates has lived and worked in all six counties of the 2nd district for over 25 years. Seven of the candidates, including all of the other leading candidates are from Marin and south Sonoma counties. He also sang the song in solidarity with the Occupy movement, noting that he and the other Earth First! activists have been “occupying Maxxam land in Humboldt County for 25 years!”

The lyrics Caffrey sang are:

Well, I come from a long, long line of tree-fallin’ men
And this company town was here before my grandpappy settled in
We kept enough trees standin’ , so our kids could toe the line
But now a big corporation come and bought us out, got us workin’ double time, but tell me…

Where are we gonna work when the trees are gone?
Will the Big Boss have us wash his car, or maybe mow his lawn?
I’m a man, I’m a man, I’m a lumberjack man, but I fear it’ ain’t for long
Tell me, where are we gonna work when the trees are gone?

Even though this was Caffrey’s lifetime solo singing debut, fellow candidate Dr. William Courtney called Andy’s performance, “Magnificent!” Caffrey is the world expert and preeminent archivist of music from the Earth First! movement and coined the genre name for it, Gaiabilly. Caffrey hosted a Gaiabilly music program on KMUD a few years ago called Rockin’ in the Tree World. Caffrey is now learning more of the songs himself for future surprise performances along the campaign trail.

Caffrey is also now preparing to record an actual album of this music with backing tracks recorded by people from all six counties of the 2nd district. Caffrey has begun recording a capela versions of the songs which he will post online for musicians of all musical genres to download so they can create whatever musical backing they prefer, from folk to punk, to acoustic guitar or piano, to electronica and hip hop. “Then I’ll select 18 songs,” he said, “hopefully three each from each of the district’s counties, and release an album with the working title: Rockin’ in the Tree World: Songs for a New Green America.

To commence the project Caffrey will be conducting a Gaiabilly singing workshop and recording session from 10 AM-Noon on Sunday, February 12 at the Chinmaya Mission just south of French’s Camp on Highway 101 at the Humboldt-Mendocino county line. This is part of a weekend of nonviolence training sponsored by Occupy Richardson Grove two weeks before the Caltrans road expansion project in Richardson Grove goes on trial.

Caffrey was involved in co-founding both U.S. Green parties, the Citizens party in 1980, which ran for president environmentalist Barry Commoner, and the modern Green party back in 1985. Frustrated with the inability of Greens to get elected to federal offices because of the party’s third party status, five years ago he began to plan a way, registered Democratic, that he could defeat incumbent Blue Dog Democrat Mike Thompson in the Democratic primary and become the first Green ever elected to Congress.

With the new California Top Two Open Primary, his strategy has changed only a bit. His goal is to “win by reaching as many people with our message using our grassroots community networks and the social networking tools, such as youtube and facebook, as the corporatist candidates can reach with a million dollars worth of TV ads. If we can do that, then we’ve essentially gutted much of the advantage of moneyed candidates over candidates who come out of genuine community leadership. Then we can begin to wage an electoral revolution against the Republicans and corporatist Democrats, and begin to elect Greens to replace them.”

At the Eureka debate, Caffrey pledged, “I will be the Republicans worst nightmare. And I will also be the worst nightmare of [former Democratic House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi if she pulls impeachment off the table again or does any of those other things that allowed, just like Mike Thompson allowed… the Bush administration to go on for eight years! Probably the most destructive thing to happen in the last fifty years was to allow the Bush administration to go on.”

According to internal polls contracted out by Caffrey’s political consultants, Triumph Political, Caffrey has never been further back than third place, and until this month only 1% out of 2nd place, currently held by contender Marin County Supervisor Susan Adams. While mathematically-uninformed supporters of author and activist Norman Solomon believe Solomon to be the favorite to make the Top Two with Assemblyman Jared Huffman, the numbers tell a different story.

“Solomon’s ‘fame’ has only earned him one percent of the district’s vote,” claims Caffrey. “Of all the seven candidates running without prior elected office experience, I’ve been in first place all along, despite my campaign running on 1/50th of the quarter of a million dollars each raised by Solomon, Huffman, and Marin millionaire Stacey Lawson. Of those three, Huffman is the only one who has been ahead of me. After campaigning hard for almost a year now, it is only this month that Norman has come up to tie me in third place with 5% of the electorate saying they will vote for him.”

Caffrey’s campaign is built around a set of seven proposals called New Green America, which Caffrey produced to help the nation focus on our greatest political, economic, and ecological crises in a timely fashion, undistracted by the fabricated fiscal crises that are the current preoccupations of the Republicans. The Proposals are:

1. Fight The Climate Crisis as Threat Number One
2. Rebuild America’s Infrastructure around Bioregions and Sustainability to meet all our needs as close to home as possible, TAX THE RICH, Medicare for All and Expansion of the Social Safety Net
3. Retreat the U.S. empire. Use the military only to defend Americans and their US property
4. End Corporate Personhood
5. Legalize Marijuana and End the War on Drugs
6. Prosecute the Bush administration for Crimes Against Humanity, War Crimes, Torture, and Murder
7. Electoral Reform, Ranked-Choice Voting, and Paper Ballots. Get Corporate Money out of Elections

This video assembles all of Andy Caffrey’s comments at a Eureka, CA Congressional candidates debate on December 22, 2011. The debate with five other Democratically-registered candidates for the 2nd district seat was sponsored by the Eureka Progressive Democratic Club.

Andy was the first candidate to speak at the debate. He began his opening remarks by singing an anti-corporate, pro-timber worker Earth First! anthem, “Where Are We Gonna Work When the Trees Are Gone.” This was Caffrey’s life premiere solo singing event and preceded President Obama’s rendition of a line from an Al Green song by a month, making Caffrey the first 2012 candidate for federal office to sing at a political event and first in memory to sing as part of one of his debates.

He promises many more to come and is recording an album with constituent musicians from all six counties of the 2nd district which runs along the North Coast of California, from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border and includes Marin County, and the marijuana growing capital of the world, the three counties that comprise The Emerald Triangle.

Caffrey helped co-found both U.S. Green parties: The Citizens party in 1980 and the current green party movement in 1985. He has been an international Earth First! organizer since 1985 and the first to organize both a grassroots anti-GMO group, the Strawberry Liberation Front and Mindless Thugs Against Genetic Engineering, and Climate Crisis grassroots group Climate Action NOW! in 1996.

The BBC recognized him in 2002 as a World Historic Figure as the World’s First Crop-Puller because he organized a monkey-wrenching action that uprooted a test field of strawberry plants the night before the test spraying was to begin. The campaign also resulted in the bankruptcy of the GMO company and has prevented any more genetically-engineered microbes from being released into the open environment anywhere on Earth in tests or as products ever since 1987.

Caffrey is also a medical marijuana patient and pledged at a January 15 debate to “smoke a joint on the capital steps as a Congressman and get arrested before I’ll let the federal government take away our rights to our medicine.”

Caffrey’s Congressional campaign was designed by him over five years to get him elected in this unique incumbent-free Congressional district in which marijuana and wine are the top two agricultural products and largest industries for most of the district’s counties. It is designed to reach as many voters through grassroots citizens networks and internet social networking and his own youtube videos and radio programming as a million dollars worth of TV ads can reach. The album of songs, “Rockin’ in the Tree World: Battle Cries for a New Green America,” is his latest campaign media project.

In a field of ten candidates, only three of whom have any electoral office experience, competing in California’s new Top Two Open Primary, polls show he has never been further back than a very close third place (1-3% out of 2nd place). He has a tremendous advantage as the only candidate who has lived in the entire, eclectic district. The seven Bay Area candidates from Marin or Sonoma Counties have no familiarity with the much poorer four northern, rural, forested counties world renowned for their ancient coastal redwoods.

Better coverage of the Mateel debate than the Redwood Times article, although the author came into the debate with the false presumption that the race is between Huffman and Solomon. Good ending though. In a better world, it seems, he thinks I should win.

http://www.northcoastjournal.com/news/2012/01/19/california-2nd-district-huffman-vs-solomon/

from article:

Despite being arguably the highest-profile candidates in the race, however, Huffman and Solomon weren’t the stars of the night in the eyes of the audience. Even though he’s unlikely to get much attention in November — due to, of course (insert your American electoral process injustice here) — Garberville activist Caffrey drummed up the most impassioned crowd responses.

Among the crowd pleasers: “Without marijuana this place would be Alabama … This building wouldn’t be here,” he said.

“I will fight so hard,” Caffrey said, before choking up with emotion and noting that he is a medical marijuana patient. “I will never ever let the federal government take our medicine away.”

“It will be an incredible failure of the entire hippie generation if ya’ll die without legalizing marijuana,” he said, easily gaining the loudest applause of the night.

After the debate went off the air and a few candidates had already left the building, Maiden Humboldt founder and event organizer Dave Sky took to the stage and shouted the results of an impromptu straw poll of those in attendance that evening. For what it’s worth, here are the results of the “Emerald City” mock caucus:

Andy Caffrey, 15

Stacey Lawson, 5

Normon Solomon and Tiffany Renée, 4

Jared Huffman and Dr. William Courtney, 3

Susan Adams and John Lewallen, 2

Dan Roberts, 1

After all it was in fact an Earth First! organizer, Darlene Comingore, who took down Bosco with her independent race for the House seat two decades ago.

I’ve been a Green for over 30 years and helped found both the Citizens party in 1980 and the current Green party movement in 1985–exactly the day after I joined up with Earth First!

I’m still every bit as Green and No Compromise Earth First! as I’ve ever been, but I devised a strategy whereby I can, for a whole host of reasons, actually win the seat as a registered Democrat, without a ton of money and without changing my politics at all. I’m giving the Democrats a chance to vote Green (not liberal faux environmentalism) and getting into Congress to, among many other things like climate, Ecotopian conversion, cannabis legalization, retreating the American empire, ending corporate personhood, stopping GMO food production, and prosecuting the Bush Coup, change the electoral laws so that Greens can get elected as registered Greens.

In the new Top Two open primary I’ve never been further back than 3rd place and only 1% out of second place. With his year of campaigning and quarter of a million dollars Norman Solomon has only in the last month caught up to me in 3rd place. And my budget is 1/50 of his! I have a tremendous advantage because almost all of the other candidates only know Marin and Sonoma counties. I’m the only candidate who knws the entire district. I’m the only one who has lived and worked over all six counties. I’ve lived in the redwoods and the Emerald Triangle for most of the last 20 years, and my current Garberville apartment for 13 years. I’ve been fighting Maxxam since 1986. Plus Republicans seem to like me. They seem to see in me the Eagle Scout with six palms who got into Annapolis, and not some caricature of a lefty or tree hugger. But here is why I’m posting this to you:

None of the other candidates in this race will work even a fraction as hard–if at all–as I will to open the FBI’s records on Earth First!, Redwood Summer, the Arizona Five set-up and bust of Dave Foreman, Peg Millet and the others, and, of course, get the lowdown on the bombing of Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney. None will have the case knowledge, motivation, attitude, or fortitude to prosecute the leaders of the COINTELPRO operations when found to be criminal, or to pursue all leads, inside and outside the federal government, from Washington DC to Willits, from Houston to Oakland to Redwood Valley. I will!

I was Judi and Darryl’s close friend, co-organizer and confidant during her entire life in Earth First! and was her first video documentarian, planning actions and travelling on all the road shows together. To her daughters I was Mr. Perfecto. My video footage was used to help them win the case against the FBI and Oakland PD. A month before Judi died, she told Alicia Little Tree to tell me at the EF! organizers conference that Judi hoped I’d continue with my EF! video work (which completely blew me away).

About 1/10 of Darryl’s and Mary Liz Thomson’s new documentary on Judi is my footage, the best part of the film being the extended section with my Cahto Peak action footage. I sat behind Judi in that Subaru many times, and if I had finished the Redwood Summer documentary earlier, before the bombing, and the bomb had gone off a little later in the day when they would have been on the road to Santa Cruz, I very likely would have been in the car sitting behind her to show my video in Santa Cruz. I very likely would have had at least my feet blown off.

Darryl considers me one of the most knowledgable people in the world about this case. He and I have had discussions about setting up a group to run a reward fund for information leading to the arrest/conviction/jailing of the bombers. I was the webmaster for the Jail Hurwitz web site for a year.

I made the official Redwood Summer video, Redwood Summer: Where the 90s Begin with Mary Liz Thomson and Tim Modok and conducted the two-month, 10,000-mile Redwood Summer road show in 1990, the only person outside of California telling the nation about what really happened with the bombing and the FBI COINTELPROs, and what Judi and Darryl were really like politically and as people (I always told people that Darryl was far too much of a wimp to get near explosives since he’s afraid of fireworks!)

So, if you would like to get to the bottom of the car bombing or Arizona 5 COINTELPRO’s please consider supporting my Congressional campaign and making a contribution today. I think this is the greatest opportunity we’ll ever have to get to the bottom of these cases, get justice, and keep similar operations from ever happening again. I think some stiff jail sentences or even some life convictions for the instigators and directors of activist murder campaigns might send a message through the ranks…

Ali, I’m watching Your Money this morning and I just don’t get it. How can a hack like Stephen Moore still be given any credibility? Please check out this article from the World Economic Forum: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16735022

It’s clear the economy is going down for good. It’s also clear that only a demand-side stimulus (e.g. rebuilding a New Green America) can change things at all. The only place that demand funding can come from is the wealthy: by retreating the American empire and ending military Keynesianism (which you never talk about–our entire economy lies on a Keynesian foundation except the money doesn’t go to the poor and middle class to stimulate demand, it goes to defense contractors, radically reducing the multiplier effect compared to, say, a new Green Keynesianism), ending the War on Drugs, legalizing cannabis, new protectionist tariff’s, and taxing the rich. After all, that’s where all the money went over the last 30 years.

Have you ever heard of reciprocity treaties? Look it up. James G. Blaine negotiated them as Secretary of State in the mid-19th century. They only traded surplus production and kept the American industrial and agriculture base intact to meet all of our needs domestically, always. They never would have allowed the exportation of most of our industrial and agricultural base!

That’s why I’m running for Congress on a New Green America platform: http://CaffreyForCongress.org/. I don’t see any other option, but many on the right keep lying that further tax cuts will create miracles. You know it won’t. Can’t solve the problems of the economy by doing more of what caused the sucking of wealth from the middle class to the rich and brought everything down. If you steal the gas from the middle class to drive the economy, of course the car stalls. You don’t get it going by sucking the fumes out of the tank.

I’m tired of “tax cuts” at the top even being presented on TV as being anything but a farce propped up by the most demented and psychopathic economists. It’s clear the rich have to create that stimulus directly by reversing their class war of the last 30 years. It’s almost as if the economic journalists have been intimidated into submission to present this hack economics just as everyone in “The Emperor’s New Clothes” pretended the Emperor wasn’t naked. Well, he was!! And he is!!

Curious what you think about this. Brother Ali, are you and the other mainstream economics reporters all in denial that you’ve allowed these ecologically illiterate, flat-Earther hacks to flood the airwaves and press for years? They’ve been dominating the framing of public economic discussions for decades, and directing corporate media reporters, whether on Fox News, CNN or CNBC, towards taking for granted that upper-class wealth-accumulating, laissez faire über alles economics is the only and best way to go. But they were always wrong over the last 30 years, since Reaganism, that this was the path to prosperity for all Americans, and that it was somehow the same thing as democracy (e.g. We can’t have one without the other–democracy and capitalism are almost synonymous in the mass media). What it’s done while y’all weren’t paying attention is bring us to the brink of omnicide: the death of all.

Globalization depends on massive fossil-fuel consumption. How can we reduce greenhouse gas emissions enough in time to avert, oh, say, the melting of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets if we are building our society on a globalized economic foundation? Brother, you guys have got to take a look around the ecosphere and repent. You are still doing economics as if we weren’t living on a living and evolving planet! Exactly how do you calculate the destruction of the Earth’s evolutionary potential by massive habitat extermination? You don’t. You externalize those costs and hope they won’t matter, while the rich go on their merry way singing and dancing all the way to the bank.

Why don’t you measure our ecological capital and talk about our ecological debts? To survive, we have to limit ourselves to living off the interest of that capital, obviously. So why don’t you tell us how we’re doing? Why not give us a report on that every month, reporting on our ecological current accounts? Economics TV programs should have been doing that since the first Earth Day in 1970.

There are no jobs on a dead planet.

The most important questions for our time, which none of you has ever asked are, How much do we have to reduce our fossil-fuel emissions and alter our society and economy to prevent climate destabilization and social and ecological chaos? How much time do we have to do it? Well, I’ve been researching it for 30 years. We got the answer in 1990 when the EPA, the IPCC, and Woods Hole Research Center all issued reports indicating that to stabilize Earth’s climate systems, we had to reduce our emissions on the order of 55-80% below 1990 levels by 2000-2005. Since that time the science has shown that those were underestimates of how much change we must make for our society to survive the century. So the answer is: We’ve run out of time. We still have to make those reductions by 2005! Just because the Republicans and Democrats did nothing to even try doesn’t mean they were able to go to some bank and borrow more time!

Our only hope now, if you do the math, is for President Obama to declare a National Climate Emergency and launch a war effort to convert the nation away from fossi-fuels and nuclear power as fast as humanly possible, to decentralize the economy to meet everybody’s needs from as close to home as possible, designed for sustainability around bioregions, and to launch a Green Marshall Plan for the Third World to do the same, no matter what that means for the corporations and their investors. There are no profits on a dead planet.

It’s been like someone trying to hire a contractor to build a house, and nobody notices that none of the bidding contractors include a roof with the house! Yet they still insist this house will keep you safe from the elements! Delusional! The only reason this murderous game has been going on is because of the MASSIVE externalities built into the system by the Republican and Democratic plutocrats. Those externalities are what is bringing about planet death.

We still have peak oil, the collapse of 90% of the ocean’s major fisheries, the climate crisis mediation measures that none of your are talking about that we haven’t even initiated, much less paid for, and peak everything. We are at the limits of almost every environmental and resource measurement, with an expanding global demand from population growth and Third World economic development. Our ecosystems are collapsing now! We’ve already had way too much “economic growth” to maintain a healthy planet. Economic growth means planetary plunder. It’s Cocaine Economics: squeeze all the energy out of your body now for short-term, immediate-gratification profits, but die much sooner than you otherwise would from early aging and a withered, depleted body. Same ideology as the cancer cell: unlimited, undifferentiated growth is good until that growth kills the host body.

Here’s a number for you: In 1997 there were 200,000 lions in the wild. Ten years later there were 20,000. As rare and endangered species move closer to extinction, supply and demand cause the value of their pelts to go up, and hence provide more and more inducement to hunt the animals to extinction with greater and greater ferocity each passing year. But in the capitalist system that growing scarcity is supposed to increase the value of keeping those lions alive and thus, prevent their extinction, right? Of course, it presumes that we have some kind of control over the supply, and that the lion habitat isn’t an open system surrounded by millions of starving people. This is happening to all the charismatic megafauna on the planet, eliminating crucial links in our ecosystems, leaving behind only what scientists call the weedy species (you know, cockroaches, rats, coyotes) and radically simplified ecosystems globally with radically reduced biological and economic output. Unless we stop it, it will make all of the continents’ wild areas look pretty much the same when the species diversity has plummeted.

“Economic globalization exacerbates the species-loss problem in several ways,” according to Stephen M. Meyer, professor of political science at MIT*.

“It increases the demand for natural resources in remote and undeveloped regions that otherwise would be left alone. In locations previously occupied by subsistence villages, labor towns spring up to support foreign timber and mining operations. As foreign capital flows into undeveloped regions in inflates the price paid for local goods, thereby increasing incentives for overexploitation to feed the lucrative export market… More than 80% of the [Malaysian and Indonesian] rainforests have now been logged, slicing the orangutan population to less than ten percent of what it was decades ago. In Brazil the greatest single threat to the Amazon rainforests is beef production headed for the global market, which has increased sixfold since 1999.

“Furthermore, the flow of money into less-developed regions spurs local economic demands–for development, services, and advanced commodities. Pressures on the local landscape increase proportionally…. Breaking down economic barriers effectively breaks down geographic, ecological, and biotic barriers as vast numbers of plants and animals are shipped worldwide to support the pet and horticultural trade.” Invasive species are transported much more, speeding the decimation of countless ecosystems the world over.

So what gives, Ali?

I watch y’all and it’s like watching babbling crazy people sometimes. I still watch your show every week, though. Where are resource shortages and these economic limits included in your calculations for economic growth? It’s time to look around and smell the flowers: the growth economy itself is moribund. The planet is on the brink and it is capitalist industrialism that brought it here.

Good luck!

This is a video of my answers at my first Congressional candidates debate. It was in San Rafael in Marin County on 12/14/11, eight days before the Eureka Progressive Democratic Club debate. The event was hosted by Michael Krasny, an NPR talk show host. His opening and closing comments are also included in this video. This was the first debate with all seven Democratically-registered candidates.

The 300 people in attendance gave us a standing ovation afterward. It was a very moving experience. The entire debate is worth watching. There has probably never been assembled a finer group of candidates running for one Congressional seat ever in American history. No kidding. You can watch that at http://blip.tv/community-media-center-of-marin-cmcm/cd2-candidate-forum-5829416

BTW The name card is incorrect, kind of. Among all those Progressive Democrats, yes, I’m the one with genuinely Green politics and a 30-year history developing the Green and Citizens parties in the US. But I’m running to win in this unique district and that means running registered Democratic. All of the candidates in this debate are registered Democratic.

Mary Anderson, Redwood Times

The candidates vying for the open seat in the newly created Second Congressional District found a lot of common ground when they met at the Mateel Community Center Sunday, January 15.

The candidate forum was organized and sponsored by the Redwood Caucus, led by local resident Dave Sky. The three-hour program was broadcast on KMUD Redwood Radio and KZYX, Mendocino, and on public access television.

For the record, the candidates are Susan Adams, Dan Roberts, Brooke Clarke, Tiffany Renee, Stacy Lawson, Andy Caffrey, John Lewallen, Jared Huffman, Norman Solomon, and Dr. William Courtney. Huffman, who enjoys the support of the Democratic Party structure is considered the front-runner.

Candidates filled the stage and left just enough room for moderator Ed Denson. Each brought their own nameplate to place in front of themselves; some were printed, some homemade on the spot. Questions had been solicited ahead of time on KMUD. Denson selected one about corporate personhood to get things rolling.

It was a good start. All ten of the candidates want to see the ruling that corporations have the same rights as people overturned. The second question tested support for requiring that foods containing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) include that information on the label. Once again, there was agreement, with Huffman, a member of the California Assembly, noting that he had already introduced AB88, legislation to do just that.

The third question was a complicated one, dealing with permit fees for rock cod fishermen. The fees are different in different zones and the question dealt with disparity between fees charged in one zone as opposed to another.

The other candidates all expressed support for a “level playing field” for small business competing with large corporate businesses, but candidate Lewallen, who is a seaweed gatherer, went so far as to say that he wanted a review of the entire Groundfish Management Act and would take steps to put a stop to “the privatization of regulations.”

The next question asked each candidate to reveal their earnings for 2011. The range of incomes was astonishing. Susan Adams earned $90,000, Dan Roberts $300,000, Brooke Clarke $100,000, Tiffany Renee $16,000, Stacy Lawson $30,000, Andy Caffrey $12,000, John Lewallen $20,000, Jared Huffman $85,000, Norman Solomon $55,000 and William Courtney $110,000.

They were all asked about their contributors. Most have received money from friends, family and individual supporters. Huffman has received PAC money. Renee said that she had raised $10,000 from individual supporters and needed another $15,000 to get statements on the primary ballot. She said the process of raising money to run for office has convinced her that a new paradigm is needed for the election process. All the candidates will have to disclose their donors in the next few weeks.

All were asked if they believed that climate change is real. All answered yes, except Roberts. He said “no.” Clarke said he had believed it was real, but was uncertain now and waiting to hear from scientists he had contacted.

Naturally, the candidates were asked about marijuana. The consensus was that it ought to be legalized, taxed and regulated like cigarettes and alcohol in a way that protected small growers from agribusiness corporations. Even Roberts, who said that he had to respect federal law regarding marijuana, said he favored legalization.

Renee said she thought the issue ought to be addressed at the federal level by reclassifying marijuana. Courtney referred to the persecution he has suffered at federal hands but declared himself ready to “go toe to toe” with the authorities over the benefits of medical marijuana.

Huffman said he didn’t think the country as a whole was ready to legalize marijuana. He favored approaching the federal government and working out a system that would satisfy federal concerns while protecting patients and suppliers.

The candidates were also asked to present their environmental credentials by listing the organization they belong to or work with. Each candidate had a list. The Audubon Society was mentioned, along with Save-the-Redwoods, EPIC, Mendocino Environmental Center, Bay Keepers, and somehow, the League of Women Voters got on the list.

All of the candidates oppose the use of drone aircraft to bomb countries with which we are not at war and all believe that indefinite detention is a violation of the Constitution.

”What people want in other countries is no different from what we want,” she said. “A save place to live, food on the table, and a meaningful life.”

Lawson said she was “thrilled we’re all in agreement on this.”

All the candidates were given a final three minutes to tell the voters why they should be elected to the office.

Lewallen identified himself as the oldest candidate in the race and said that if he was elected it would be “real reform” and that the voters could be sure that his youth would not be destroyed by Washington.”

This prompted Renee to identify herself as the youngest candidate who was the first Latina ever elected to the Petaluma City Council.

All of the candidates have websites where voters can learn more about them and their beliefs.

photo caption:

Ten candidates filled the stage at the Mateel Community Center Sunday evening. Reading left to right, Susan Adams, Dan Roberts, Brooke Clarke, Tiffany Renee, Stacy Lawson, Andy Caffrey, John Lewallen, Jared Huffman, Normon Solomon, and Dr. William Courtney answered questions submitted by voters. As near as anyone can remember, it’s the first time a Congressional candidates debate has ever been held in Redway.
