Press Conference: A press conference in solidarity with the nonviolent resistance to the federal attack on legal medical marijuana will be held by Congressional Candidates Andy Caffrey, Dr. William Courtney, and John Lewallen on Thursday, May 17, at 2 p.m., at the former location of the closed-down Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana, 6 School Street Plaza, in Fairfax.

Congressional candidates Andy Caffrey, Dr. William Courtney, and John Lewallen are asking the nine other candidates in California’s Northcoast Second Congressional District, and all other concerned citizens, to join them in demanding that the federal government “Stop the Federal Attack on Legal Medical Marijuana.”

“Since October last year,” said John Lewallen , “the federal Drug Enforcement Agency and Internal Revenue Service have engaged in a coercive campaign against California legal medical marijuana dispensaries, public officials who are trying to regulate medical marijuana, and Oaksterdam University.

“Federal tactics of coercion including SWAT-team raids, threats of prosecution and asset forfeiture, and denial of rights to open bank accounts and deduct business expenses, are forcing legal medical marijuana dispensaries to close. Public officials are afraid to adopt regulations. The legal medical marijuana dispensaries still operating live in an atmosphere of terror, and deserve the support of all business owners and other citizens.

“As congressional candidates, it is our duty to uphold the Constitutions of the United States and the State of California. We demand that the federal government stop this unconstitutional attack on legal medical marijuana, and respect the sovereign rights of California and Californians to develop a well-regulated medical marijuana industry.”

Andy Caffrey, a Garberville resident in Humboldt County, added, “As a PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) medical marijuana patient myself and direct action Earth First! organizer I am willing to get arrested as a Congressman on the capitol steps fighting for the defense of medical marijuana patients and their civil liberies. That’s why on Saturday at Occupy Mendocino I became the first Congressional candidate to smoke a joint during his own campaign speech, to protest President Obama’s War on Medicine. This is a fundamental right that all three of us-John Lewallen, Doctor Courtney and I-will never compromise on and never stop fighting for. We are the Emerald Triangle.”

Dr. William Courtney is concerned that the federal attack on legal medical marijuana will prevent him from treating seriously ill patients with non-psychoactive marijuana. “Clinical cannabis is used by my patients with infant epilepsy, cancer, and other very serious diseases, with amazing healing results,” Dr. Courtney stated. “Seriously ill children require long-term use of clinical cannabis. Now dispensaries that provide non-psychoactive raw cannabis are being closed, because landlords are sent letters from the federal government threatening asset seizure. Is it because the federal government feels that some children do not deserve the right to life?

“Please stop all the wars on humanity: the war on medicine, the war on health, the war on terror, the wars for oil and other resources.”

Today is the 25th anniversary of the world’s first anti-GMO sabotage action. It was against the release on strawberries of a genetically-engineered bacterium the inventor called iceminus and the company Advanced Genetic Sciences called Frostban. I co-ordinated the campaign and the Ecotage, and the BBC considers me a World Historic Figure for it as “The World’s First GMO Crop Thrasher!”

The campaign didn’t stop two tests by the company and a third in Tule Lake, CA with potato chunks dipped in the stuff and then planted by the UC Berkeley inventor. But all three tests were hit by saboteurs called The Strawberry Liberation Front and Mindless Thugs Against Genetic Engineering.

But a year later the project co-ordinator for AGS told me that we didn’t know how successful we had been. Their investors were all bailing ship because they thought we would never give up and so they thought the return on their investments would be indefinitely delayed. A year later AGS was bankrupt. Over 30 other tests by other people were going to be conducted in the next two years. There have been no more open air tests of GMO microbes anywhere on Earth since 1987 thanks to this campaign! One of the most successful and important (and grossly under-reported) environmental battles ever waged, yet never discussed.
